Objective: Mindfulness, as one of the most important psychological skills, plays an important role in managing athletes’ competitive emotions. However, the cognitive mechanisms underlying its effects on emotion regulation have not yet been fully elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of organic self-talk in the relationship between mindfulness and emotion regulation in elite athletes.
Methods: This descriptive-correlational study employed a partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. The study population consisted of elite athletes from individual and team sports, of whom 286 athletes (215 men and 71 women) were selected using convenience sampling. The research instruments included the Mindfulness Questionnaire, Organic Self-Talk Questionnaire, and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SmartPLS 4.
Results: The results indicated that mindfulness had significant positive effects on organic self-talk (β = 0.684, p < 0.001) and emotion regulation (β = 0.294, p < 0.001). In addition, organic self-talk significantly and positively predicted emotion regulation (β = 0.486, p < 0.001). Bootstrap analysis further revealed that organic self-talk played a significant partial mediating role in the relationship between mindfulness and emotion regulation (β = 0.332, p < 0.001). The proposed model explained 61.3% of the variance in emotion regulation.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that, in addition to its direct effect on emotion regulation, mindfulness may contribute to improved emotion regulation among elite athletes by enhancing the quality of organic self-talk. Therefore, psychological interventions based on mindfulness training and the enhancement of organic self-talk may represent an effective strategy for improving psychological readiness and emotional management in elite athletes.
