Objective: The sports performance of elite athletes is influenced by numerous psychological factors, among which self-compassion and self-regulation have received increasing attention in recent years. The present study aimed to develop a structural model of the relationship between self-compassion and sports performance, with self-regulation as a mediating variable, among elite athletes.
Methods: This descriptive-correlational study employed a structural equation modeling approach. The statistical population consisted of elite athletes participating in individual and team sports, from whom 320 athletes were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using Neff’s Short Self-Compassion Scale, the Athlete Self-Regulation Questionnaire, and a Sports Performance Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26 and SmartPLS version 4 through structural equation modeling.
Results: The results showed that self-compassion had a significant positive effect on self-regulation (β = 0.614, p < .001) and sports performance (β = 0.180, p < .001). Furthermore, self-regulation significantly and positively predicted sports performance (β = 0.572, p < .001). Bootstrapping analysis also demonstrated that self-regulation had a significant mediating role in the relationship between self-compassion and sports performance (β = 0.353, p < .001). The proposed model demonstrated a satisfactory fit and explained 58.2% of the variance in sports performance.
Conclusion: Self-compassion may facilitate improvements in elite athletes’ sports performance by enhancing self-regulatory processes. Therefore, training in self-compassion-based skills and strengthening self-regulation strategies may be incorporated into mental preparation programs for elite athletes and may contribute to enhanced performance under competitive conditions.
