Objective: Low self-esteem and overweight are among the most significant risk factors for physical and mental health, leading to reduced individuals' daily functioning. In recent years, novel neuroscience-based approaches such as electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have been recognized as effective and safe methods for improving these indicators. Therefore, the present study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of these interventions on self-esteem and body mass index (BMI) in overweight adults.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study with a pre-test–post-test design was conducted on 36 men aged 18 to 40 with a body mass index above 25 from gyms in the city of Mashhad in 2021, who were randomly assigned to three groups of 12. While all three groups received 12 sessions of standard physical fitness training, one group served as a control, the first intervention group underwent 12 EMS sessions, and the second intervention group received 12 sessions of EMS combined with tDCS. Participants' self-esteem was measured using the Eysenck Self-Esteem Questionnaire, and the data were analyzed using analysis of covariance in SPSS-21 software.
Results: The results showed that the EMS intervention group and the EMS + tDCS combination group, compared with the control group, had significant improvements in self-esteem and body mass index (P < 0.01).
Conclusion: The results indicate the effectiveness of combined EMS+tDCS and EMS interventions in enhancing self-esteem and reducing body mass index in overweight adults. Such findings may reflect a psychomotor interaction and have important clinical applications in health psychology and neuroscience.
