Objective:
The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of computerised cognitive training and mindfulness on executive functions in adolescent basketball players.
Methods:
This study employed a semi-experimental design with a pre-test–post-test format and a control group. The sample consisted of 57 male adolescent basketball players aged 15 to 18 years who voluntarily participated in the study. The experimental groups included a computerized-cognitive training group (using the Captain’s Log software) and a mindfulness group (using a mindfulness-based performance enhancement training approach). Both groups followed their respective intervention protocols for 5 weeks, with 2 sessions per week. Data were collected using computerised versions of the Go/No-Go task, the N-back task, and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test.
Results:
The results indicated that, overall, both computerised cognitive training and mindfulness interventions led to significant improvements in executive function components—namely response inhibition, working memory, and cognitive flexibility—compared with the control group (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences were observed between the two experimental groups (p > 0.05).
Conclusion:
Overall, the findings suggest that both computerised cognitive training and mindfulness can be used as effective approaches to enhance cognitive functions in adolescent athletes.
