Background and Purpose: Physical activity is associated with emotional, cognitive, and motor functions; however, the relative contribution of these domains to physical activity levels in young women remains unclear. This study examined the associations of emotional intelligence, executive functions, and static balance with physical activity level and their relative contributions to its prediction.
Methods: This descriptive-correlational cross-sectional study included 62 undergraduate female students from Islamic Azad University, Hamedan Branch (mean age: 21.67 ± 2.56 years). Physical activity level was assessed using the Paffenbarger Physical Activity Questionnaire, emotional intelligence using the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale, executive functions using the Digit Span and Stroop tests, and static balance using a force platform under a dual-task condition. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression analyses were used for data analysis.
Results: Physical activity level was positively associated with self-awareness, social awareness, and the total emotional intelligence score (p < 0.05). Among the executive function measures, incongruent response time and Stroop interference time were negatively associated with physical activity level, whereas working memory measures showed no significant associations. Among the static balance variables, only the spectral power of center-of-pressure oscillations was significantly associated with physical activity level. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the regression model was significant and explained 23.5% of the variance in physical activity level (R² = 0.235, F(3,56) = 5.738, p = 0.002). Within the model, Stroop interference time was the only significant predictor of physical activity level (β = -0.334, p = 0.007).
Conclusion: Cognitive inhibition, particularly Stroop interference time, showed the strongest association with physical activity level, whereas emotional intelligence and postural control were only weakly associated. Due to the cross-sectional design, the findings indicate associations rather than causal relationships.
