Objective: Given the limited evidence regarding changes in passion and sports performance across different levels of sport orientation during educational periods, the present study aimed to examine changes in dualistic passion orientations and sports performance among students with different levels of sport orientation over one academic semester.
Methods: The present study was applied in terms of purpose and employed a longitudinal observational design with repeated measures. The statistical population consisted of students at the University of Tabriz who had enrolled in the practical physical education course during the semester in which the study was conducted. Following completion of the Sport Orientation Questionnaire (SOQ), participants were classified into three levels—low, moderate, and high—based on their scores, with 12 participants in each group. Harmonious passion and obsessive passion were assessed using Vallerand’s Passion Scale, while performance was evaluated using a basketball shooting test at two time points: pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using a 3 × 2 mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA) at a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The results showed significant changes over time in harmonious passion, obsessive passion, and basketball shooting performance (P < 0.05); however, the between-group differences and the time × group interaction were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Descriptively, the high sport-orientation group showed greater increases in harmonious passion and shooting performance, whereas the low sport-orientation group showed a greater increase in obsessive passion.
Conclusion: The results showed that over one semester of physical education, students’ harmonious passion and skill performance improved, with no significant differences in these changes across different levels of sport orientation. These findings highlight the importance of considering individual differences alongside shared educational experiences when explaining changes in passion and sports performance.
