Objective: Coaches’ Leadership Style, as a key environmental factor, plays an important role in the formation or prevention of Athletic Burnout in football players. Additionally, social support, as a mediating variable, can moderate the effect of coach-athlete interactions on athletes' psychological status. Therefore, the present study examined the relationship between Coaches’ Leadership Style and football players' Athletic Burnout, considering the mediating role of perceived social support.
Methods: The present study employed a descriptive-correlational and survey-based design and was applied in terms of purpose. The statistical population consisted of young football players aged 18 to 28 years in Basra, who were selected through purposive sampling. The sample size was determined as 119 participants based on G*Power software calculations. Data were collected using the Coach Leadership Style Questionnaire, the Athletic Burnout Questionnaire, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26 and SmartPLS for path analysis at a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The results of the path analysis showed that the direct relationship between Coaches’ Leadership Style and football players' Athletic Burnout was not significant. However, there was a positive and significant relationship between Coaches’ Leadership Style and perceived social support, and a negative and significant relationship between perceived social support and Athletic Burnout.
Conclusion: The findings revealed that coaches' leadership style does not directly predict athletic burnout among football players; rather, it indirectly explains burnout through perceived social support. Perceived social support served as a full mediator in this relationship and was significantly associated with reduced athletic burnout. Accordingly, coaches can mitigate athlete burnout by fostering a supportive environment and enhancing athletes' perception of social support.
