Objective: Exercise is effective on people's mental and physical health, but competition and competition conditions sometimes cause individuals to face problems such as sports anxiety and lack of self-efficacy.This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of reality therapy on sports anxiety and sports self-efficacy in adolescent female karate athletes.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up design with a control group. The target population comprised adolescent female karate athletes in Isfahan during the spring of 2025. Using a convenience sampling method, 30 participants were recruited and randomly assigned to either the experimental group or the control group, with 15 participants in each. The study employed the Sport competition anxiety test, and the Sports Self-Efficacy Questionnaire as measurement tools. Participants in the experimental group attended eight 60-minute sessions of reality therapy, while those in the control group did not receive any intervention.Data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 23.
Results: The results showed that following the implementation of the reality therapy protocol, sports anxiety decreased significantly, and sports self-efficacy improved compared to the pre-test (P= 0.01). However, no significant differences were observed between the post-test and follow-up scores in the groups.
Conclusion: Based on the findings of the study, reality therapy can be employed as an effective approach to reduce sports anxiety, and to enhance sports self-efficacy among adolescent karate athletes.
