Objective: Given the importance of emotion regulation in improving athletic performance under psychological pressure, the present study aimed to examine the effectiveness of adaptive emotion focused training on emotional control and basketball free throw accuracy among female students
Methods: The research method was quasi experimental with a pretest–posttest design including a control group and a follow up phase. The statistical population consisted of female students aged 11–13 years in Ahvaz, from which 40 participants were selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=20) and a control group (n=20). The experimental group received adaptive emotion focused training for eight sessions (90 minutes each, every other day), while the control group received no intervention. Participants were assessed at three stages: pretest, posttest, and follow up. Data collection instruments included the emotional control subscale of the Mental Toughness Questionnaire and a basketball free throw accuracy test conducted under induced psychological pressure. Data were analyzed using mixed repeated measures ANOVA in SPSS version 23 at a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The results indicated that adaptive emotion focused training significantly improved emotional control (η²=0.952, p=0.001, F=719.895) and basketball free throw accuracy (η²=0.738, p=0.001, F=107.228) in the experimental group compared with the control group, and these effects remained stable at follow up.
Conclusion: These findings suggest that adaptive emotion focused training can be considered an effective approach for enhancing emotional regulation and improving skill performance under psychological pressure in student athletes.
