Objective: This study aimed to explain the psychological competencies of professional football coaches and to identify the levels, relationships, and functions of these competencies within Iranian professional football.
Methods: This qualitative study used Strauss and Corbin's systematic grounded theory approach. It focused on three foreign professional coaches working in Iranian football, selected based on criteria such as sustained experience at the professional level and work in competitive, multicultural environments. Data were collected through purposive and theoretical sampling from 16 key informants, including players, assistant coaches, technical staff, club managers, and interpreters, who had close and sustained experience working with these coaches. The study began after approval from the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Sport Sciences and Health, University of Tehran, and informed consent from all participants. Data were collected and analyzed concurrently through open, axial, and selective coding, using the constant comparative method and peer auditing by the research team.
Results: : Analysis of the interviews yielded 934 initial codes, organized into 45 subcategories and eight main categories within a three-level architecture. The core level comprised emotional-cognitive self-regulation; the enabling level included person-centered adaptive communication and team identity formation and cohesion; and the operational level consisted of motivation, empowerment, and player development, supportive-protective leadership, competitive psychological preparation, and justice-oriented ethics. The eighth category, cultural adaptation and stakeholder relationship management was identified as a cross-level intervening factor influencing all three levels. Within this framework, adaptive psychological leadership emerged as the core phenomenon, arising in response to relational, motivational, ethical, and cultural demands through the dynamic interaction of these categories.
Conclusion: The proposed three-level framework has practical implications for coach education programs, professional competency assessment, and leadership development in football. It offers a basis for rethinking sport federations' coaching approaches across diverse cultural contexts.
