Objective: This study aimed to compare neurofeedback training and left hand dynamic contraction on rumination in skilled shooters with choking under pressure experience.
Methods: This study was a semi-experimental design. A total of 28 participants (17 women and 11 men), aged 18 to 38 years (M = 25.36, SD = 6.31), with a history of choking under pressure and meeting the inclusion criteria, were selected as the final sample. In the pre-test phase, participants completed the Sport Competition Rumination Scale (SCRS) one hour before the competition. Then they participated in an official national competition (60 shots in accordance with ISSF regulations). Afterward, participants were randomly assigned to three groups: a neurofeedback group (n = 10), a left-hand contraction group (n = 9), and a control group (n = 9). The intervention groups (neurofeedback and left-hand contraction) received their respective training for four weeks across 10 sessions. Following the intervention period, participants took part in the post-test. Two months later, athletes participated in a retention test, which was conducted identically to the pre-test and post-test procedures.Data were analyzed using a repeated-measures analysis of variance (mixed within–between design), with the level of significance set at 0.05.
Results: The repeated-measures ANOVA showed no significant time × group interaction effect for sport-related rumination, F(3.02, 37.70) = 2.81, p = 0.52, ηp² = 0.18. A significant pre-test to post-test reduction was observed in the neurofeedback group (p < .05). No significant pre-test to post-test changes were found in the left-hand contraction or control groups (p > .05).
Conclusion: The present findings indicate that neurofeedback training appears to reduce sport-related rumination and could be considered a novel approach for use by athletes and coaches in performance enhancement programs.
