Objective: Aging is a period that is accompanied by physiological and psychological changes and can affect people's lifestyle. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of mind-body and mindfulness exercises based on stress reduction on psychological factors of the elderly.
Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest and control group. Participants in this study were 45 older adults aged 65 to 80 years who voluntarily referred to the elderly care center in Tabriz province. After completing the informed consent form, participants were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and one control group. Prior to the intervention, the pretest including completion of the questionnaires was administered. Subsequently, the experimental groups participated in mind-body exercises and mindfulness-based stress reduction for 24 sessions (8 weeks, three sessions per week), while the control group received no intervention. At the end of the intervention, the posttest including completion of the questionnaires was administered to all three groups. Data were analyzed using 2 × 3 mixed analyses of variance (ANOVA) at a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The findings showed that mind-body exercises increased self-esteem and reduced depression, anxiety, stress, and somato-social anxiety, while mindfulness exercises had a stronger effect on reducing anxiety and stress. Both interventions were effective in reducing depression and stress compared to the control group, but no significant difference was observed between the two experimental groups.
Conclusion: Mind-body and mindfulness interventions are effective approaches to promoting the mental health of the elderly and can be integrated into care programs for this age group.
