Objectives: The aim of this study was to predict fear of failure among young athletes in Shiraz through the dimensions of perfectionism.
Materials & Methods: A total of 309 athletes under 21 years old (194 males and 115 females) from Shiraz were selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Sport Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (Dunn et al., 2006) and the Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory (Conroy et al., 2002). Data were analyzed using the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and linear regression.
Results: Findings showed significant relationships between the negative aspects of perfectionism and various aspects of fear of failure. Concern over mistakes significantly predicted all aspects of fear of failure. Perceived coach pressure significantly predicted fear of experiencing shame and embarrassment, fear of upsetting important others, and fear of important others losing interest. Additionally, perceived parental pressure significantly predicted the fear of upsetting important others.
Conclusions: Overall, the findings indicate that the negative dimensions of perfectionism, particularly excessive concern over mistakes and perceived pressures from coaches and parents, substantially contribute to the development of fear of failure in young athletes. Accordingly, integrating strategies to address these factors within psychological intervention programs may be beneficial in reducing fear of failure and improving the mental well-being of athletes.
