With the increasing life expectancy in various societies and the growing elderly population, along with the prevalence of physical problems associated with this life stage, investigating low-risk methods that can, to some extent, aid in improving physical activity is of great importance. Therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate the impact of combining physical activities with different cognitive styles on the motor performance of elderly women.
The present research was applied in nature and employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test/post-test approach. The participants included 40 elderly women aged 65 to 75 from Tehran in 2023. They were selected based on inclusion criteria (minimum age of 65, no medical contraindications) and exclusion criteria (absence from more than one session per week). Participants were randomly assigned to four experimental groups based on cognitive styles (optimistic and pessimistic) and exercise modalities (group and individual). The groups underwent 8 sessions of 30-minute aerobic and walking exercises. The instruments used in this study were the Sherer and Carver Optimism Questionnaire and a performance-based motor assessment test.
The results of the multivariate analysis of variance indicated that aerobic and walking exercises led to an improvement in the motor performance of elderly women, with a significant difference observed between the pre-test and post-test motor performance among the training groups (P > 0.05). In the post-test phase, group training (M=24.5) resulted in better performance compared to individual training (M=23.45). When comparing the means, the motor performance of the optimistic group (M=65.5) was slightly higher than that of the pessimistic group (M=65).
Elderly individuals are exposed to numerous physical and psychological challenges. In this study, aerobic and walking activities had a positive impact on the motor performance of the elderly and can be recommended as exercises with a lower risk of injury
