The present study aimed to explain and model the development of cyber-psychology in Iranian sport with an emphasis on sport managers, and to propose a localized framework for managing opportunities and threats of digital environments in the sport system. The research employed a qualitative approach using Grounded Theory based on Strauss and Corbin’s model. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 sport managers and officials at club, federation, and provincial levels. Purposeful and chain (snowball) sampling continued until theoretical saturation. Data analysis was conducted through open, axial, and selective coding, and trustworthiness criteria (Lincoln & Guba) were addressed; inter-coder agreement reached 0.90.
Findings indicated that the core category was the need to design a policy-making and supportive structure to integrate cyber-psychology into the sport system. Causal factors included increasing moral–media crises, expansion of digital psychological disorders, and long-term costs of ignoring mental health. Contextual factors—such as a shortage of interdisciplinary experts, the science–practice gap, financial constraints, traditional management, and managers’ low digital literacy—and intervening factors—such as the absence of formal structures and behavioral regulations, lack of indigenous platforms, inter-unit inconsistency, and managerial instability—shaped action pathways.
Five strategies were proposed: developing a national digital mental health policy document, establishing an organizational position for “cyber-psychologist,” implementing indigenous psychological monitoring systems, empowering managers, and strengthening applied research. The stepwise implementation of these strategies can reduce crises, enhance psychological security, and increase the efficiency and structural resilience of sport organizations.
