Objective: The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of a mindfulness intervention program on reducing pain, injury anxiety, and improving athletes' performance during the rehabilitation phase after injury.
Methods: This is an experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of 60 injured athletes from the Omidiyeh oil industry who referred to the Sports Medicine and Corrective Movements Clinic in 1403 to file a medical record. Sampling was done conveniently and by considering the inclusion criteria. To implement the intervention, a 6-session mindfulness training course by Kaufman and Glass (2006) was used. The research instruments included the McGill Short Form Pain Questionnaire (1997), the Cassidy Sports Injury Anxiety Questionnaire (2000), and the Charbonneau Sports Performance Questionnaire (2001), which were completed by the participants in two stages: pre-test and post-test.
Results: : According to the research findings, athletes in the experimental group who underwent mindfulness training experienced a significant reduction in sports injury anxiety and pain perception and increased sports performance compared to the control group (P<0.001). Also, analysis of covariance showed that this intervention had a significant effect on all psychological and functional aspects of athletes. Specifically, mindfulness training led to a decrease in pain perception, decreased sports abilities, decreased social support, decreased likelihood of reinjury, decreased frustration, improved self-image, and decreased overall sports injury anxiety, while significantly improving sports performance.
Conclusion: Mindfulness therapy is used as an effective treatment in reducing pain and anxiety from sports injuries, as well as improving the performance of injured athletes, and its implementation can help improve their psychological and functional status.
