The literature review indicates that despite the recognized importance of psychological factors in sports, the simultaneous relationship between competitive anxiety and loneliness, emotion control, and emotional intelligence in adolescents has been less investigated. The present study aimed to compare loneliness, emotion control, and emotional intelligence in secondary school students with high and low sport competition anxiety.
This research was a descriptive study of the causal-comparative type whose statistical population included all secondary school students in the central district of Borujen County during the academic year (2024-2025). Using a purposive sampling method, 160 students (male and female students in these areas who participated in sports competitions and had high or low sport competition anxiety) were selected as the sample, forming two groups of 80 individuals: one with high and one with low sport competition anxiety. Data were collected using the Sport Competition Anxiety Questionnaire (Martens), the Loneliness Scale (Asher), the Emotion Control Scale (Williams), and the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (Schutte). Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test and Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA).
The results of the Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) indicated a significant overall difference in the linear combination of the dependent variables (loneliness, emotion control, and emotional intelligence) between the two groups (p < 0.001). To investigate this overall difference more precisely, the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was used. The results of these analyses showed a significant difference between the two groups in terms of each of the three variables separately. Specifically, students with high sport competition anxiety experienced greater loneliness, weaker emotion control, and a lower level of emotional intelligence (p<0.001).
The findings of this study emphasize the importance of addressing the psychological dimensions of sport competition anxiety in adolescents and can assist in designing educational and counseling interventions to reduce anxiety and enhance emotional skills.
