Objective: Shooting, as a complex cognitive-motor skill, requires optimal integration of neuromuscular and cognitive performance. Since fatigue, both mental and physical, can disrupt this integration, it is of great importance to identify indicators to measure it. Brain waves, as a non-invasive representation of the functional state of the brain, can provide such an indicator. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of mental, physical, and combined fatigue on theta, alpha, and beta brain waves of shooters.
Methods: The study sample consisted of 40 semi-professional shooters aged 18-28 who were randomly divided into four groups: mental fatigue, physical fatigue, combined fatigue and control group. In the pre-test, all subjects fired 10 shots and brain waves were simultaneously recorded by an electroencephalography device. Then, the mental fatigue group received a thirty-minute Stroop task, the physical fatigue group received thirty minutes of cycling, the combined group received fifteen minutes of Stroop and fifteen minutes of cycling, and the control group did not receive any intervention. The post-test was conducted according to the pre-test. The data were analyzed using SPSS27, Excel10 and Matlab2019 software and the combined analysis of variance statistical method.
Results: In theta wave, mental fatigue increased activity in the prefrontal and inferior frontal regions, physical fatigue increased activity in the prefrontal, inferior frontal, frontal, temporal, combined fatigue increased activity in the inferior frontal region. In alpha wave, mental fatigue increased activity in the prefrontal, frontal, temporal, central physical fatigue increased activity in the frontal, temporal, central and posterior temporal regions, combined fatigue increased activity in the temporal and central regions. In beta wave, mental fatigue increased activity in the inferior frontal, frontal and central regions, physical fatigue increased activity in the prefrontal, frontal, central regions.
